River Adventure
Experience the Wild & Scenic Upper Missouri River and the wide-open landscapes that surround Fort Benton.
The landscapes surrounding Fort Benton are wide, rugged, and largely unchanged from what Lewis and Clark would have seen. Along the Wild & Scenic Upper Missouri River, you’ll find expansive horizons, abundant wildlife, and a sense of scale that’s both humbling and unforgettable.
This is Big Sky Country as it was meant to be seen—open, quiet, and far from crowds.
On the River
The Missouri River is the heart of outdoor recreation in Fort Benton. Calm stretches of water, ample access points, and long scenic floats make it well suited for both first-time visitors and experienced river users.
River Safety Comes First
The Missouri River is a large, powerful river that deserves respect. There can be strong undercurrents and shifting eddies that can surprise even experienced boaters. Life jackets are strongly recommended for all river users, and mandatory for children under 12.
Canoes and kayaks are the watercraft of choice on the Missouri. They handle the slower current well and give you the best control, stability, and safety on the water. Rafts are a great option in the spring but are not recommended once the flows drop. Come prepared for wind and changing weather no matter the season.
When in doubt, hire a guide.
